Sparrow Room recently opened its doors with a new type of happy hour entertainment: mahjong tournaments. Billing itself as a “speakeasy-style mahjong parlor,” the new spot serves up dim sum and craft cocktails in a stylish and swanky setting. While the cocktails are allowed (and “encouraged”) at the mahjong table, you’ll have to take a brief intermission to eat.
When you do, nosh on signature small bites (AKA dim sum) like the crispy popcorn chicken dressed in Shaoxing seasoning paired with the deep-fried turnip cakes stuffed with Chinese sausage and baby shrimp. You might also want to try the dumplings filled with shrimp and bamboo or pork and shiitake mushrooms, or perhaps the char siu bao, milk bread buns stuffed with tender pork belly. Complement the dim sum with a signature cocktail from the bar, like the Lychee Pearl. It combines top-shelf gin and lychee juice with cucumber, mint, and verjus. The move onto the main course dish like the Mapo tofu or salt fish eggplant, but save some room for mango pudding for dessert!
